Character Breakdown:
Lottie: 25-35, German accent, cellist (the actor will not be required to play). A passionate artist who wears her emotions on her sleeve. She would rather keep her head low and turn a blind eye to Nazi atrocities and the horror of war, until she is forced to face them in her own home.
Freya: 50-65, German accent, musician, Lottie’s mother. Since the death of her husband, she has been determined to do what is right in the face of Nazism. She is harboring a Jew in her basement, and she will stop at nothing to protect him.
Konsta: 35-45, Russian accent, Russian soldier. Has survived his military career through cunning rather than force. Intelligent and manipulative. The pervasiveness of war makes him increasingly violent over the course of the play.
Gerhardt: 50-65, German accent, Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. He takes great pride in his position and his orchestra. Believes the orchestra is essential to Berlin, and will do what he must to serve the people while protecting his musicians.
Ensemble (3M, 1F): 20’s-40’s. To play Russian soldiers, German soldiers, Gestapo officers, burglars, and citizens of Berlin. Ensemble will understudy leads.
