The Washington Chorus seeks a conductor

The Washington Chorus seeks a conductor of outstanding talent, musicianship, and artistic vision to serve as Music Director beginning with the 2017/18 season. Julian Wachner, whose inspired leadership has earned national recognition and critical acclaim since 2007, will step down as Music Director at the end of the 2016/17 season.

The Position

The Music Director provides musical leadership, creative vision, and artistic direction to The Washington Chorus. Working with the Board and the Executive Director, the Music Director The Washington Chorus ensures that the Chorus fulfills its mission and achieves its goals for artistic excellence, education, and community engagement. S/he attracts and inspires high caliber volunteer chorus members; programs, conducts, and helps build audiences for innovative and diverse choral repertoire; and enhances the stature and reputation of the Chorus. S/he positions TWC at the leading edge of choral music performance locally, nationally and internationally. The Music Director cooperates and collaborates with the Board and Executive Director to maintain the financial health of the organization and to expand audience and philanthropic support for the Chorus from all sources.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will combine a thorough knowledge of choral, instrumental, and vocal performance with significant experience leading singers and instrumentalists in a broad range of repertoire and musical styles. Experience conducting a professional orchestra is required. The successful candidate will have proven ability to plan a season; rehearse and conduct concerts of superior quality; inspire musicians to a consistently high level of performance; and build an enthusiastic audience for choral music. The ideal candidate will be committed to expanding reach and impact of The Washington Chorus' education and outreach programs throughout the community.

The Music Director will make The Washington Chorus a principal professional commitment and will dedicate significant time, in addition to conducting rehearsals and concerts, to collaborating closely with The Washington Chorus' Board and management in areas such as planning, fundraising, and strengthening ties between The Washington Chorus and the communities supporting it and served by it.
