CALLING SINGERS TO JOIN WASHINGTON’S FINEST YOUTH CHORUS PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE APPEARANCES WITH LEADING ENSEMBLES AT THE KENNEDY CENTER & MORE

WASHINGTON, DC, June 2016– Building on momentum from the artistic director emeritus and founder, Joan Gregoryk’s 20th anniversary season, Children’s Chorus of Washington (CCW) is delighted to announce its auditions and registration for its remarkable 21st season under the direction of its new artistic director Margaret Nomura Clark. CCW is holding open auditions this June and again in late August and early September for its five internationally recognized ensembles, Treble Chorus, Bel Canto Chorus, Concert Chorus, Chamber Chorus, and Young Men’s Ensemble. Auditions, which are open to any children ages 8-18 interested in joining a vocal ensemble, take place on June 7th, 20th, 21st, and 25th at the Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church. For more detailed info, please see the 2016-2017 Audition Dates & Locations schedule below. To schedule a free audition, call CCW at 202-237-1005. CCW is also currently enrolling children ages 5-8 in PREP Class, an engaging vocal learning program that develops fundamental, age-appropriate vocal skills, prepares students for future ensemble singing, and fosters a playful lifelong relationship with music through games, movement, and vocal activities. To enroll in PREP Class, no audition is necessary. Please visit childrenschorus.com/programs/prep-class/ to download the registration form.

CCW’s extraordinary vocal education programs and dynamic community partnerships emphasize artistic excellence, and choristers in its five performing ensembles represent over 100 public and private schools in the greater Washington, DC area. Children selected for CCW’s five ensembles will have an exciting range of performance opportunities during the 2016-2017 season, ranging from appearances with The Washington Chorus at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, WPA’s What Makes it Great series at the Smithsonian Baird Auditorium, as well as an international tour to Argentina for Concert Chorus and Young Men’s Ensemble in the planning stage.

The five auditioned ensembles of CCW are Treble Chorus, Bel Canto Chorus, Concert Chorus, Chamber Chorus, and Young Men’s Ensemble. Starting at age 8, students with little-to-no choral training experience Treble Chorus in combination with a basic music theory class. Bel Canto Chorus, the next most advanced ensemble, continues to develop musicianship through more challenging repertoire, a greater variety of enriching performance opportunities, and a more rigorous rehearsal schedule. Concert Chorus, CCW’s largest and most advanced ensemble, is also the most frequently selected for unique performance opportunities such as international tours and performances at the most prestigious venues in the nation’s capital. Chamber Ensemble is a smaller, select group comprised of Concert Chorus singers who demonstrate great discipline, poise, musical achievement and musicianship. Although treble voices are at the core of most of CCW’s ensembles, boys with changed voices have the opportunity to join the Young Men’s Ensemble, which also tours internationally and performs regularly, often with the Chamber Ensemble to form CCW’s only mixed-voice ensemble.

PREP Class, designed to introduce first-time singers to the choral experience, is offered in two age- differentiated divisions, PREP I (ages 5-6) and PREP II (ages 7-8). PREP Class prepares students for future ensemble participation, and many 8-year-old students go on to pass Treble Chorus auditions. Both sections hold a final showcase performance at the end of each semester.
