SYNOPSIS

This is a brilliant comedy - played as farce, not slap-stick - with a fast-moving script, split-second timing, deliberate deception, lots of confusion, and an infatuation turning to love.

Setting: A hotel suite in Cleveland, Ohio in 1934.

Cast of Characters

Max - Saunders’ long-suffering assistant who is in love with Maggie. Must have a good tenor voice, be able to fake an Italian accent, and be willing to ‘black-up’ for the role of Otello. An aspiring opera singer, Max never-the-less turns to jelly when he realizes he has agreed to take Tito’s place in the Opera. This is an unintentional comedy role - age mid-30s

Maggie - Saunders’ daughter and Max’s girlfriend. One of Tito’s biggest fans and in awe of the man and his voice. She finds him far more exciting that the rather shy Max. Must be willing to strip to her underwear and be ‘passionate’ with Max - age late 20s

Saunders - Maggie’s father, General Manager of the Cleveland Opera Company - short-tempered under duress - will stop at nothing to ensure the show goes on - age mid-50s

Tito Merelli - A World-famous tenor. Must have a good tenor voice, be able to speak with a reasonable Italian accent and be willing to ‘black-up’ for the role of Otello. Egocentric and notorious ladies’ man - known to his adoring fans as Il Stupendo. Fights constantly with his wife and has a love-scene with Diana - age 40s-50s.

Maria - Tito’s wife. Sexy in an Italian way (accent needed); excitable; long-suffering; given to histrionics; busty, proud and insanely jealous of Tito’s philandering (think Sophia Loren) - age 30-40s

Bellhop - Delightful cameo role played lightly with a sense of fun. Obnoxious opera fan; persistent nuisance. Should be an able tenor and capable of speaking the Italian words in the script - age 25-40

Diana - Soprano in the opera, Otello - a glamourous ingénue soprano who does not sing. She is beautiful, sexy and very ambitious. Must be willing to strip to her underwear and play a love-scene with Tito - age mid-30s

Julia - The Chairperson of the Opera Guild and very familiar with Henry Saunders. An imposing but smart-looking woman who considers herself a Grande Dame - age late 50s-early 60s
