VA Rep's Combined Holiday Musical Auditions
Virginia Rep is thrilled to present two exciting musicals for our holiday season:
Sister Act at the November Theatre and Mr. Popper’s Penguins in our Children’s Theatre at Willow Lawn!
We know that the summer can be a busy time for performers, and as a result we are pleased to offer two weekends of combined auditions for our upcoming holiday musicals. Come enjoy a little Christmas in July, and take advantage of this unique opportunity to audition for both shows.

Based on the 1992 hit movie with Whoopi Goldberg, this musical follows the fallen showgirl, Deloris Van Cartier, who unexpectedly finds sisterhood and redemption when forced to take refuge in a convent.
Rehearsals begin: October 16, 2018
Performance run: November 16 – January 6, 2019
SEEKING:
DELORIS VAN CARTIER (20s-30s, African-American, female) a feisty, strong-willed larger than life character. Aspires to be the next great singing sensation, but is forced to hide from Curtis in a convent. Needs a powerhouse disco diva voice with a huge range.
NOTE: This role is cast. Seeking understudies.
MOTHER SUPERIOR (40+, female) haughty, well spoken, stickler for rules and routine with a tough exterior. Does not want Deloris in her convent.
SISTER MARY ROBERT (20s, female) A small, postulant nun. Very timid and quiet until she “finds her voice”.
SISTER MARY PATRICK (mid 20s-30s, female) A large, bubbly, persistently enthusiastic character. Everyone’s friend.
SISTER MARY LAZARUS (50+, female) Choir mistress. Unwelcoming to Deloris at first, but eventually gets swept up in her music.
MONSIGNOR O’HARA (40+,male) a good natured gentleman. Bright and positive despite the looming closure of his parish. Loves the change Deloris has brought to his church.
CURTIS JACKSON (35-50, male) gangster in pursuit of Deloris. Always in control, or so he thinks.
EDDIE (20s-30s, male) a good cop, former classmate of Deloris who still harbors affections for her. Determined to be her hero.
TJ (20s-40s, male) Curtis’ nephew. One of Curtis Jackson’s henchman.
JOEY (20s-40s, male) One of Curtis Jackson’s henchman.
PABLO (20s-40s, Latino/Hispanic, male) One of Curtis Jackson’s henchman.
ERNIE (20s-40s, male) One of Curtis Jackson’s henchman who turns out to be an undercover police informant.
ENSEMBLE (21+, male and female) Nuns; Bar Denizens (Bar Patron, Waitress, Pool Player, Drag Queen); Homeless People; Fantasy Dancers

Based on the popular children’s book, Mr. Popper’s Penguins tells the tale of the gentle British house painter, (with a fondness for Antarctic exploration) who finds himself and his family the proud domesticators of a family of penguins. This heartwarming tale will be a holiday treat for the entire family as they follow Mr. Popper, his family, and his talented little penguins.

SEEKING:
ACTOR 1: (20-45, male) Actor 1 plays Mr. Popper. He dreams of being an explorer! Mr. Popper is the main character of the show. Seeking an actor who can sing and move well.
ACTOR 2: (20-45, female) Actor 2 plays Mrs. Popper. Seeking female who can take on many roles and move well. Experience with puppets highly encouraged.
ACTOR 3: (20-40, male) Actor 3 – Mr. Johnson, Admiral Drake, Delivery Guy, Barber, Reporter, Policeman, Bus Driver, Theater Manager, Sven Svenson. Must be able to move and sing well. Actor will also need to puppeteer. Seeking actor who can play multiple roles. Experience with puppets is highly encouraged.
ACTOR 4: (20-40, female) Actor 4 – Mrs. Callahan, Gentleman, Curator, Passenger, Mr. Greenbaum, Cab Driver, Copper. Seeking actress who moves and sings well. Experience with puppets is highly encouraged.
Actors with puppet experience are highly encouraged to submit.
Seeking Local/Non-Union performers. All performers paid.

WHAT TO PREPARE:
Sister Act – please prepare 16 bars of a musical theatre song in the style of the show. Be sure to bring sheet music in your key. An accompanist will be provided.
Mr. Popper’s Penguins – Please prepare 16 bars of a golden age musical theatre song OR a song that best demonstrates your vocal ability/range. Be sure to bring sheet music in your key. An accompanist will be provided. You will also be asked to perform a cold reading from the script. Sides will be provided at the venue at the time of your audition.
