Description
Set against the dramatic background of an idyllic South Pacific island during WWII, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific intertwines the themes of romance, duty, and prejudice to create a story that is all at once hilarious, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking.
Based on the anecdotes of a real-life U.S. Navy commander stationed on an island, the musical follows two intercultural love stories: Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with Emile, a French plantation owner on the island who has two children from his late Polynesian wife; at the same time, U.S. Lieutenant Cable falls for a beautiful island native named Liat.
Both Americans find themselves struggling to reconcile their own cultural prejudices with their amorous feelings, all the while under the dark cloud of a war that is coming ever closer to their island paradise.
Roles
ENSIGN NELLIE FORBUSH
Female (25-29)
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Mezzo-soprano to Db5 with good belt mix and a good mover
Heroine; military nurse with a sense of optimism, in spite of the looming peril of war. A product of her Southern upbringing in Little rock, Arkansas, she struggles with her own racism when she falls in love with Emile DeBeque, an older Frenchman living in the South Pacific who is raising two children of mixed race.
The actress must have a sincerity that defies her faults and subtle comic timing.
LIEUTENANT JOSEPH CABLE
Male (20-29)
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Soaring tenor; E3 to G4.
Young, handsome officer with a bright military future.
Having served in active combat, he's struggling with the after-effects of trauma.
In spite of the unspoken rules of his privileged Philadelphia upbringing, Cable falls in love with Liat, a young Tonkinese girl.
The actor must have a strong physical presence and be believable as a hot-shot Marine.
BLOODY MARY
Female (35-55)
Ethnicity: All Ethnicities
Mezz-soprano to C5 with good belt mix.
Shrewd and abrasive; cunningly capitalizing on the war by selling souvenirs to the American sailors occupying her island.
Fiercely protective of her teenage daughter Liat and is searching to find her a suitable husband. Must have great comedic timing.
