All instruments, including strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano, harp, and voice, are welcome to audition.
Applicants should be 12 to 18 years old as of the competition date (non-college students).
It is not required that applicants be from Virginia. Musicians from throughout the region are encouraged to apply.
Music Requirements
Acceptable works for the competition include:
Single movements of concertos, single-movement works for solo and orchestra, or arias written between 1700 and 1850. Exceptions may be made, but must be approved by the audition committee prior to the competition.
Voice applicants are welcome to audition with arias or solo works that fit the time requirements.
Works should be between 5-20 minutes in length
All applicants must have their works pre-approved for competition by the competition committee. Pre-approval will be given upon receipt of the completed application form. This step is required to ensure feasibility of performance by LUSO with regard to personnel, music procurement, and preparation. Rental works are not eligible for competition.
Competition Rules
Music must be memorized.
Accompaniment is required and must be arranged for by those auditioning. Accompanists will not be provided.
Ten minutes will be allotted to each contestant’s audition. Cuts in longer works are permissible and will have no negative impact on the judge’s evaluation. Mark any cuts clearly in the scores (i.e., orchestra tutti).
Applicants must present two copies of the score for use by the judges (photocopies of public domain publications are permissible). These will be returned. Please number your measures and mark cuts.

Winners will be selected based upon the determination of the judges as follows:
1st Place – $1,000 and a performance with LUSO
2nd Place - $500
3rd Place - $250
The first place winner will have the opportunity to perform with the Liberty University Symphony Orchestra during the Spring 2019 concert series.
