Auditions for Once at VA Rep

SYNOPSIS: Once follows a classic tale of boy-meets-girl but through the eyes of two musicians and the community they bring together on the streets of Dublin. Based on the 2007 Academy Award- winning movie for Best Original Song ("Falling Slowly"), Once features a cast that acts as its own orchestra to tell an enchanting and emotionally captivating story about love,

humanity, and the saving power of music.

Rehearsals begin: January 2, 2019

Virginia Rep Performance run: February 8 - March 3, 2019

Fulton Theatre Performance run: March 14 (tech begins) March 19 - April 14, 2018

*NOTE: Performers must be available for both performance runs.

SEEKING:

GUY (20's-early 30's, male) A musician struggling with more than just his music. Must sing and play guitar extremely well. Irish dialect.

GIRL (20's-early 30's, female) a witty optimism that masks pain. Pragmatic. Possesses some sort of "other" quality. Mother to Ivanka. Must sing and play piano extremely well. Czech/Eastern European dialect.

DA (50+, male) Guy's father. Hardened exterior but generous heart. Must play guitar, ukulele/mandolin. Irish dialect.

BARUSKA (45+,female) Girl's mother. Strong but loving matriarch. Must sing and play accordion/piano. Czech/Eastern European dialect.

REZA (female) Passionate. Comfortable in her sexuality. Must sing and play violin/fiddle. Czech/Eastern European dialect.

SVEC (20-39, male) Girl's flatmate. Very odd. Loves TV. Loves heavy metal. Must play guitar and drums well. Czech/Eastern European dialect.

ANDREJ (20s, male) earnest and kind young man with big dreams. Must play guitar and bass. Czech/Eastern European dialect.

BILLY (30-50, male) Music store owner. Passionate musician that never had the courage to chase his dreams. Must sing and play guitar. Irish dialect.

BANK MANAGER (30-50, male of female) Presents a proper exterior, but harbors a secret passion for music. Must sing and play guitar/cello well. Irish dialect.

EAMON (20-50, male) Manager of a music studio. Tired of his simple existence. Must sing and play guitar. Some piano. Irish accent.

EMCEE (20-50, male) Good natured emcee at a bar. Must sing and play guitar. Some piano. Irish dialect.

EX-GIRLFRIEND (20s, female) Guy's ex-girlfriend. A dreamer. A pure soul. Must play violin. Irish dialect.

IVANKA (8-12, female) Girl's daughter. Sings well. Comfortable onstage.

Union and Non-Union. All performers paid.

WHAT TO PREPARE

Those auditioning with be asked to play and sing sides from the show. Sides will be made available via email no later than Friday, September 14, 2018. Hard copies will be available at the venue. Please also be prepared to play and/or sing brief selections that show-off your voice and your playing abilities.

CALLBACKS

Callbacks will be held the following evening, Monday, October 1, 2018. If the director would like to invite you to callbacks, you will be contacted via email no later than noon on October 1, 2018.

Virginia Rep will be hosting a New York City casting call for this production in mid October: Wednesday, October 17, 2018 - Friday, October 19, 2018. New York City auditions for Once are being handled through Bob Cline Casting.
