CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
BELLE - (20s -early 30's) Vibrant, intelligent, independent. The moral conscience of the story. Her maturity and depth of character allow her to see the true beauty and spirit of the Beast. Very strong singer. Ability to portray innocence with singing and acting. Mezzo-Soprano.

BEAST - (20's - 30's) A tortured soul who is paying the price for his lack of compassion. Angry and menacing appearance that masks a kind, warm spirit longing to rectify his past. Very strong singer. Baritone.

GASTON - (20's-30's) Handsome, masculine antithesis of the Beast who, underneath, is a shallow, self-centered braggart that thrives on attention. Very strong singer. Baritone.

LEFOU - (20-30) Gaston's dim-witted servile sidekick. Willing to suffer any humiliation to please his "master." Comfortable with physical comedy. Strong character actor. Bari-Tenor.

MAURICE - (40's- ?) - Father of Belle. Gentle, kind, somewhat scatter-brained inventor. Devoted to Belle. Baritone.

BABETTE - (20's-30's) Saucy, sexy, enchanted feather-duster. Must move well. Speaks with a French accent. The object of Lumiere's affections. Alto.

LUMIERE - (20's-?) - French butler transformed into a candelabra. Light-hearted, suave, romantic charmer. Smitten by Babette. French accent. Strong character actor who moves well. Bari-tenor.

COGSWORTH - Tightly wound head of the household. Transformed into a mantle clock. A stuffy English perfectionist. Strong character actor. Bari-Tenor.

MRS. POTTS - (30's-?) - Warm-hearted, maternal teapot. Sings the title song. British accent. Mezzo- soprano.

CHIP - (8-16). The inquisitive little teacup and the son of Mrs. Potts. Must be small enough to fit in teacart. Soprano.

MADAME DE LA GRANDE BOUCHE - (30's-?) - Former opera diva turned enchanted wardrobe. Soprano.

MONSIEUR D'ARQUE -(20's-?) - Creepy, scheming proprietor of insane asylum. Tenor.
