St. Maries Musica - Creative Conductor and Artistic Director

Position:

St. Maries Musica, an auditioned community choir in Southern Maryland, seeks a dynamic and creative Conductor and Artistic Director to continue its long tradition of providing creative musical entertainment in our tri-county communities (St. Mary’s, Calvert and St. Charles counties). The organization traces its roots to 1971, having begun as a madrigal group initially known as the Madrigal Concert Ensemble. St. Maries Musica was officially incorporated in Maryland in 1983. We received the 501(c)(3) status from the IRS in 2008. The group began by singing a cappella medieval and renaissance music. The repertoire expanded over the years to include other musical periods and accompanied pieces that cover the full spectrum of choral music. In 2015, an umbrella organization, St. Maries Choral Arts, was formed to include St. Maries Musica, St. Maries Minstrels, St. Maries Singers, Chesapeake Children’s Chorus, and SMAcappella. There is paid Assistant Artistic Director and a paid Accompanist.

Job Description:

This is a paid position, commensurate with experience. Applicants should have experience conducting adult choirs. A Bachelor’s degree +5 years’ experience or Master’s degree plus 2 years’ experience is preferred.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Lead all scheduled rehearsals as established by the Artistic Director and the Executive Board of Directors.
Rehearsals are once a week beginning in late August, and ending in late April or May of each year. There is break between the Christmas and spring seasons. Rehearsals begin at 7:00 pm and end at 9:30 pm. The Christmas season includes 5 – 9 performances/concerts, and the spring season includes 4 – 6 performances. The final concert of each season includes all groups of the St. Maries Choral Arts organization.
Maintain open communication with the membership, including rehearsal and performance notes and instructions.
Select the membership of St. Maries Musica by audition in collaboration with the Audition Committee.Auditions are traditionally held on the first rehearsal evening of each season. Auditions may be scheduled at other times as the needed.
Select music to be performed in collaboration with the Music Advisory Committee.This committee meets after the spring season to recommend music for the upcoming year. The Artistic Director has final say in music performed.
Select all artistic personnel required for concert performances. This may include instrumentalists, accompanists and vocal soloists.
Assist the Executive Board and its committee structure with on-going business.The Executive Board is comprised of Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary, Publicity Chair and a representative from each of the other groups in the St. Maries Choral Arts organization. The Executive Board meets at the beginning and end of each performance year and as-needed during the concert season. There is also a meeting of all Musica members in the spring to elect officers and discuss other business matters.
