Chautauqua Opera Young Artists Auditions


Chautauqua Opera Young Artist Program in Chautauqua, New York is holding auditions for season 2010-2011.

Requirements:
1. APPLICATION – Please type or print legibly. This application should be filled out in full. Do not write: “see resume.” If applicable information is missing, the application will not be processed. Make a copy for yourself. Application link available at opera.ciweb.org/faq

2. RESUME AND 8” x 10” PHOTO – Resume MUST include YEAR AND LOCATION performances took place and YEAR degrees were conferred. Photo should have YEAR it was taken on reverse side. If any pertinent dates are missing, the application will not be processed.

3. PROOF OF AGE – A copy of your birth certificate, passport photo page, or driver’s license is required of all applicants. Applicants must be 21 years of age by December 31, 2010, and should have completed their senior year of undergraduate studies by June 2011. Singers over 35 are ineligible for either program.

4. CD should contain two contrasting solo arias (one in English) recorded within the past 12 months. It is not necessary to make a “studio” recording or enhance the recording in any way. Be sure to listen to your recording before sending it. We receive many blank or inaudible recordings, and we will not consider these applicants for an audition. Put your name on both the recording and the case. Please note that your recording may not be returned.

5. NONREFUNDABLE $20 PROCESSING FEE – This fee should be in the form of a money order made out to CHAUTAUQUA OPERA. Personal checks or cash will not be accepted – NO EXCEPTIONS.

6. PROOF OF RIGHT TO WORK/ STUDY – If you are not a U.S. Citizen, include a copy of your valid Green Card or Student/Practical Training Visa. These documents must not expire before August 31, 2011.

Auditions are held at NOLA Studios at 250 West 54th Street in New York City.


Audition Requirements:
Applicant must be a United States citizen or have the proper permits to work and/or study in the United States. If applicant has already completed two AGMA apprenticeships or six roles under AGMA contract, s/he is ineligible for the Chautauqua Opera Young Artists Program.

Compensation:
Housing, a travel allowance, and a weekly stipend are provided for all Young Artists.

More Information:
There are two divisions of the Young Artists Program.
APPRENTICE ARTISTS sing or cover leading, supporting and/or comprimario roles in mainstage productions, concertize with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, and perform at outreach performances under the auspices of an American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) Apprenticeship contract.

STUDIO ARTISTS perform in musical theater revues, art song recitals, and a program of opera scenes; they may also be assigned cover or comprimario roles in the mainstage productions, and are hired under non-AGMA contracts.

All Young Artists also have many opportunities to participate in master classes given by distinguished artists, agents and voice teachers. Notable masterclass artists in the recent past have included Constanza Cuccaro (Indiana University), Peter Kazaras (Seattle Opera YA Program), Marlena Malas (Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music), Patricia Misslin (New England Conservatory) and Brian Zeger (Juilliard).
